Founded in 1895, less than 15 years or so after the arrival
of the first professional artists in the town, the Newlyn Society of
Artists quickly became the focus of exhibiting activities for the progressive
and extremely influential landscape painters that came to live and work
there. Now over a century later it remains no less vigorous, with a
current membership of some 130 artists representing a wide diversity
of practice, from painting and sculpture to photography, video, installation
and performance art, it also runs an extremely active exhibition programme
for twelve weeks a year in the Newlyn Art Gallery.

A presdigeous collective of over 60 artists working predominently
in paint, printmaking, drawings and sculpture. They have a gallery in
the centre of St Ives which has a changing mixed display of the societies
work in the main gallery space and has a seperate gallery space - the

An independent library established in 1818 situated in
the beautiful Morrab Gardens
in Penzance. The Morrab Library is rare because it is the only independent
library in Cornwall and one of only 19 in the United Kingdom. It is
one of the largest - ranking sixth, with more than 40,000 volumes and
is strong in literature, history, biography, antiquities, topography
and travel and religion. It houses a marvellous series of collections
which have gradually been acquired since the library was founded in
1818. The Jenner Room has brought together its extensive Cornish collection
and its holdings on the other Celtic countries as a centre for Celtic
studies.
